How to Set Up a React Project with Vite

By Mohd Saqib on 4/3/2025

Introduction

Vite is a modern frontend build tool that provides a faster and more efficient development experience compared to traditional bundlers like Webpack. It is widely used in the React ecosystem due to its lightning-fast hot module replacement (HMR) and optimized build process.

In this guide, we will walk through the steps to set up a new React project using Vite.

Step 1: Install Node.js

Before setting up a Vite project, ensure that you have Node.js installed on your system. You can download and install it from Node.js Official Website

To check if Node.js is installed, run the following command in your terminal:

node -v

If Node.js is installed, it will display the version number.

Step 2: Create a New React Project with Vite

Run the following command in your terminal to create a new React project using Vite:

Replace my-react-app with your preferred project name.

Alternatively, if you use Yarn, run:

Explanation:

1. npm create vite@latest– This command initializes a new Vite project with the latest version.

2. my-react-app– This is the name of your project folder. You can replace it with your preferred name.

3. --template react– This flag specifies that we want to use React as our framework.

After running the command, the terminal will prompt you with some options:

1. Select a framework: Choose React by using the arrow keys and pressing Enter.

2. Select a variant: Choose JavaScript if you want to use plain JavaScript, or TypeScript if you prefer TypeScript. In this example, we select JavaScript

Step 3: Navigate to the Project Directory

After the setup is complete, navigate into your project folder:

cd my-react-app

Step 4: Install Dependencies

Once inside the project directory, install the required dependencies by running:

npm install

Or, if using Yarn:

yarn install

Step 5: Start the Development Server

To start the development server, use the following command:

npm run dev

Picture 9, Picture

Or with Yarn:

yarn dev

This will start the Vite development server, and you can access your React app in your browser at http://localhost:5173/

Once your project is set up, you will see a structure similar to this:

Picture 11, Picture 1. src/: Contains the main React components and logic.

 2. public/: Stores static assets.

 3. index.html: The main entry file for the app.

 4. vite.config.js: Configuration file for Vite.

Step 7: Build for Production

To create an optimized production build, run:

npm run build

Picture 12, Picture Or with Yarn:

yarn build

This will generate a dist/ folder containing the optimized assets.

Conclusion

Setting up a React project with Vite is quick and easy, thanks to its modern build system and fast development server. Whether you're building a small app or a large-scale application, Vite provides an efficient development experience.

Now that your React project is ready, you can start building amazing user interfaces with React and Vite. Happy coding!
